long lost brother: found in japan
well, not really.
i’m in love with this picture, a pair of kids are beating the monster up, and another one is giving it an adoring hug. This monster is the work of Atsushi Tomura!
Atsushi Tomura crafts ‘kigurumi’ , which are costumed characters, not unlike the various bad guys that the power-rangers fought every week. Ping-Mag has a great article on Tomura right now, every one should check it out! There are more great pics of his other creations, his process and sketchbook stuff. There is even a youtube clip of him scaring some kids, and then eventually getting beaten up.
I feel like Tomura is a ‘brother’ in a way, although I can’t specifically articulate how and why. I think it might have to do with bringing these creatures out and about the real world, and the juxtaposition of these ridiculous things amongst people.
He kind of reminds me of a new-age Jim Henson, who remains my number-1 answer to the question ‘if you could meet one person in the world, alive or dead, who would it be?’. Thats about it! I’m writing this in the morning so, good morning internet!
